Professional Photographer Saves a Life

During a recent wedding, one of the guests approached me and thanked me for saving his life. Not often does a photographer hear that, but after I heard his explanation; I truly understood.

This guest was the camera guy; he was the friend that always had the camera when their group got together. Therefore, when, the bride and groom started making their wedding plans, he offered to be the wedding photographer. He told me, shortly after he made the offer, he realized that being a wedding photographer was more than taking a few lucky photos during an outing.

His realization happened when he attended another wedding and observed what professional photographers do during a wedding day. He saw the equipment that they had and the organization happened to make the day flow properly. He witnessed the assistant posing the group in an effortless fashion, then fuss over the smallest detail, the necklace, the dress, the cuffs and the flowers. He observed the professional photographer working the room taking candid pictures while the assistant gather small groups of guests for some intimate posed portraits. He witnessed the photography of the formal wedding party portraits and was shocked at the ease that the wedding party moved with the guidance of a professional photographer.

He told me of having cold sweats when he saw the final cut of the wedding photography. There were 1500 pictures for the bride to choose from. To add to his misery his future client and friend was given a link to the wedding day photos and was busting at the seams to have the same quality for her wedding day. He realized that he had never taken more than 100 photos in any given day and he was away above his level of skill and comfort. That is when he informed his friend that she deserved a professional to photograph her wedding; especially with all the money that she was investing in everything else. He knew that this was the only record she would have of her wedding day. Therefore, he offered to contribute to the cost of a professional as his wedding present to her.

Gord Evans Photography photographed that wedding with great results. We not only use this wedding as a sample on wedding consultations, but we also enjoyed saving his life. We photographed his friends’ wedding this year and just signed the “would be photographer” for his wedding in July of 2009. We are looking forward to saving a lot more lives in years to come.

We had a great time being part of Greg and Samantha’s Wedding. The Wedding was held at the picturesque Sarnia Golf and Country Club, what a great venue. The staff of Gord Evans Photography had a bit of a contest to see who could get the most “air” on the beach shot, the winning photo is above. Sam biggest challenge now is deciding which of the 1500 photos that she wants included in her package.

We get asked a lot why we leave so much white space around a subject. Well the best way to describe why is to demonstrate the reason pictorially. We will start with a simple photograph from a wedding.

Amanda & Shawn

We completed some engagement photos for Amanda and Shawn last Sunday with the worst possible sun, the sun was so bad Shawn could barely keep his eyes open ;) . They included their son Braden and we got some great shots.
We are looking forward to their upcoming wedding it is going to be our biggest wedding party of the year, I think Amanda told us it was nine on both sides.

Purple Loosestife - Depth of Field

We had an opportunity to photograph some "Purple Loosestife"during our travels. Pretty flowers, although they tell me they are bad for the environment.

They do give us an opportunity to demonstrate a perfect Depth of Field Photograph. If you notice the flowers in the forefront are perfectly in focus will the flowers from the centre point of the photograph on, are slightly less in focus until they are totally blurry or out of focus. This is only obtainable in a close up shot with a SLR (single lens reflex) camera that has a lens that is an F2.8 or smaller. You may have heard the term quick lens or fast lens, now you know, one the effects that a lower F-Stop can bring. Unfortunately for photographers the lower the F-Stop the more expensive the lens; We currently have all of our lens better than a F2.8.

In future Blogs, we will demonstrate other advantages of having quick lens- Low light, No flash Photography.
